How these scripts work

Every script on this site does the same three things: it reads information from your computer, prints it in a readable report, and stops. Nothing is installed, nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing changes without your approval.

Frequently asked questions

Are these tools really free?

Yes. Everything on this site is free to download and use, with no trial timers and no bundled extras. The scripts are small enough to read in a few minutes before you run them.

Are they safe to run?

The diagnostic scripts only read information and print it — they change nothing on your PC. The file-sorting script shows you a preview of what it would do and does nothing until you approve it. Full source code is published on every page so you can check.

What do I need to install?

Nothing. Windows PowerShell is built into every PC, and Linux and macOS already have a terminal. You download one file, open a terminal, and run it.

My PC is slow — where do I start?

Start with the Diagnose a Slow Windows PC guide. It walks through checking startup programs, memory, disk space and background processes in order, using the free scripts on this site.

Do you review paid software?

No. Everything listed here is free and open source. The recommendations page covers the best free alternatives to popular paid programs (office suites, video editors, password managers and more).

Can I use these on Mac or Linux?

Every script has a PowerShell version for Windows and a bash version for Mac and Linux. The guides note which steps differ between systems.
